Radio One takes hit outside of Toronto, Ottawa and Edmonton


TORONTO – CBC Radio One 99.1 was quick to point out its Metro Morning Show continued to dominate the Toronto morning market when BBM released its S3 2008, or summer, radio ratings earlier this week. Radio One’s morning show with host Andy Barrie garnered a 12.4% market share in S3. The market share for CBC Radio One rose from 7.4 to 7.6. in Toronto from S2 to S3 for adults 12+ from Monday to Sunday in the 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. period.

But aside from markets such as Toronto, Ottawa and Edmonton, the picture isn’t as rosy in other parts of Canada for Radio One.

Radio One saw its market share fall from 0.7 in S2 to 0.3 in S3 in Quebec City; from 0.6 to 0.3 in Montreal, from 8.6 to 6.5 in Winnipeg, from 8.1 to 6.6 in Calgary, and from 9.1 to 8.5 in Vancouver.

For the French-language Radio-Canada Première Chaîne, the market share fell from 12.7 in S2 to 10.7 in S3 in Quebec City and plunged from 13.6% to 9.5% in Montreal.

While Radio One in the English market of Ottawa-Gatineau rose from 8.7 to 9.9, the French-language Première Chaîne dropped from 9.6 to 7.6 in that region. Ratings were up for Radio One in Edmonton, rising from 4.5 to 5.6.

In private radio, gainers in the ratings from S2 to S3 included:

– Corus Entertainment’s French-language CFMO FM oldies station increasing its market share to 15.7 in S3 from 13.7 in S2
– English-language Montreal radio station Q92, an adult contemporary channel owned by Corus, upping its market share to 19.3 from 16.2
– Astral Media-owned CJAD, an English-language contemporary station in Montreal that also broadcasts the Montreal Canadiens games, increased its market share to 20.3 from 18.5
– Rogers’ Classical Rock station CHEZ FM in Ottawa having its market share rise to 9.1 from 7.2
– Newcap’s Hot 89.9 station in Ottawa upping its market share to 17.7 from 11.5
– French-language Rock Détente, owned by Astral Media, jumping its market share to 28.7 from 23.1 in Ottawa-Gatineau
– Astral Media’s rock station, The Bear, in Edmonton, increasing its market share to 11.6 from 9.7
– CTVglobemedia-owned hit music station CFBT FM in Vancouver rising in popularity to a market share of 9.8 from 7.5.

Also of note, marking its first time in the ratings charts, new Calgary radio station CFXL had a 4.2 market share.
