Quebec and TELUS partner on $1.6 million training program and the creation of 149 jobs

MONTREAL – TELUS and the Quebec government have partnered on a $1.6 million training program and on the creation of 149 new jobs in the telco’s Quebec technical support team.

Nearly $405,000 of the training money will come from the provincial government’s Emploi-Québec, it was announced Thursday.

TELUS said it’s investing in superior quality technical support as the smartphone becomes increasingly popular. The wide array of phones and the diverse functions they offer call for advanced technical skills and specialized training for technicians to assist customers quickly and easily, TELUS said in a media release.

“By supporting TELUS in developing its employees’ skills, our government is once again showing the major importance attributed to manpower training,” said Quebec Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, Sam Hamad.

Some of the Quebec government’s training money will be targeted at the younger generation.

“This partnership with the government of Quebec allows us to continue to invest in the local economy while creating national career opportunities for Quebecers,” said TELUS Quebec President Karen Radford.

In 2007, TELUS said it invested about $4.75 million in training activities for the 5,000 members of its Quebec team.

The announcement came a day after TELUS said it would invest $33 million in an eco-friendly IT facility in Laval, Quebec.
