SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Advances in 3G and WiMAX will play a major role in the type of services customers will see in the future, according to a report by research firm In-Stat.
“Two of the biggest device trends in the cellular industry are dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi phones and femtocells,” said In-Stat analyst Daryl Schoolar. “This trend can change how operators sell both voice and data services.”
The report, entitled Impact of Devices on a Mobile Broadband Universe, notes that femtocells will create new service opportunities for carriers that will help them win new subscribers.
The In-Stat research also noted that the impact of dual-mode Wi-Fi cellular handsets will be greater on data than voice, that growth in WiBRO services has taken off as device choices increased, and that Wi-Fi has become pervasive across all categories.
The report also stated that successful growth in mobile broadband requires three components: users, infrastructure and devices. The device is in the middle of the relationship between user and the network, shaping how those two interact.
