TORONTO – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local One is holding up three reports it commissioned to urge the City of Toronto and Toronto Hydro Corp. to keep Toronto Hydro Telecom as a publicly owned asset.
“Three reports, prepared independently, all arrive at similar conclusions from distinct points of view,” said Pauline Niles, president of Local One, which represents 27 unionized employees who work for Telecom as well as 1,250 employees of Toronto Hydro.
Nile said in a media release the union was taken by surprise when Toronto Hydro Corp. announced last January that it’s considering the sale of Telecom.
The union is asking the Toronto Hydro board to hold public consultations on the matter.
The three reports were prepared by the SeaBoard Group, Professor Robert Hebdon (from the McGill Desautels Faculty of Management) and Professor Andrew Clement and Amelia Bryne Potter (both from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Information Studies, Community Wireless Infrastructure Research Project).
