Telus launches low-cost Koodo Mobile service

TORONTO – Telus Corp. has launched a new low-cost, no-frills mobile service, called Koodo Mobile, that offers talk and text options.

Koodo Mobile’s cheapest plan costs $15 a month for 50 minutes at any time of the day, and 50 text messages. Voicemail, call display, and an unlimited text messaging cost $5 a month or $10 a month for all three.

A media release refers to the service as “fat-free mobility” because it doesn’t feature more bandwidth intensive features such as television, video calling and satellite radio. There is no activation fee and no fixed-term contract. Billing is per second, not per minute, to keep customers’ mobile bills “trim and under control.”

Customers have the choice of three pre-packaged plans or the option to build their own, including a plan competitively positioned to replace the need for a home phone line, according to the media release.

“Koodo Mobile is a new talk and text wireless service that is affordable and straight forward – customers don’t pay for features they don’t need or want, it’s that simple,” said Chief Koodo Officer Kevin Banderk in the release.

Koodo Mobile can be purchased at major retail outlets including Best Buy, Future Shop, Wal-Mart, Zellers, London Drugs and The Brick.com as well as at Koodo Shops in select retail malls. For details, go to www.koodomobile.com.

Telus registered the business name Koodo Mobile in various provinces, including New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan, last year, and this year obtained the domain name koodomobile.ca.

Telus’s rivals Rogers Wireless and Bell Mobility both have separate wireless brands – Fido and Solo respectively.
