Canuck stations win 26 Murrows


WASHINGTON – Fifteen Canadian radio and television stations were honoured this week by Radio Television News Directors Association International with regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.

The list of winners was released in Washington D.C. Wednesday and includes 17 television and nine radio Murrows for Canadian newsrooms.

Global BC led the list with four Murrows, the most won by any single Canadian station this year. Among other television winners in the large market category: City TV Toronto with two, CTV Vancouver (CIVT) with a pair, CTV Toronto (CFTO) and Global Ontario with an award each.

Winners in the small market television category were: A-Channel Vancouver Island with two, CTV Atlantic with a pair, A-Channel Barrie, CH Vancouver Island, and CFJC-TV Kamloops.

In the large market radio category, CFTR (680News) Toronto led with three, CFRB (Newstalk 1010) Toronto won a pair, and CHUM/CHUM-FM Toronto won as well. In radio, small market, the winners were: CKGL (570News) Kitchener with two and VOCM St. John’s with another Murrow to add to its collection.

The regional awards will be presented to the winners by RTNDA International Chair Bill Roswell in a special ceremony at the RTNDA Canada national conference in Vancouver on Saturday, June 23rd. The winners now move on to the judging for the International Murrows to be presented in New York in October.
