TORONTO — Toronto Maple Leaf tough guy Tie Domi is retiring to become a commentator on TSN.
The Leafs bought out his contract at the end of last season. Domi announced at an emotional news conference in Toronto this afternoon that while he had offers to play for other teams, “I just couldn’t put on another jersey…other than blue and white.”
Domi said he’ll be a regular hockey analyst on TSN’s Wednesday night NHL broadcasts. “The people at TSN have been incredible. I’ve never felt so wanted in my life.”
In a news release, TSN said that Domi called CTV President Rick Brace asking for a position. TSN President Phil King held a “secret audition” and Domi was hired.
After 16 years in the league, Domi said becoming a broadcaster means “I’m a rookie again.” Hinting at the CBC’s practice to keep opinionated commentator Don Cherry in check, Domi joked, “I might need a six-second delay when I first start.”
Domi will join former teammate Glenn Healy, along with host James Duthie, TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger, and veteran hockey broadcaster Dave Hodge during weekly in-studio panel discussions and debates. “I may have to body check Glenn Healey from time to time,” he laughed.
Domi said he was happy to join the TSN “family” and thanked the network for giving him the opportunity to keep a hand in the game. He will continue to be based in Toronto.
King said, “Tie brings the same edge to the broadcast panel that was so much part of his game on the ice. His colourful presence, knowledge and passion for the game will be a big bonus for our viewers.”
Domi makes his broadcasting debut on October 3 at 7:30 p.m. ET, providing analysis during the network’s 90-minute NHL on TSN Preview Special.
Before joining the Leafs, Domi played for the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets. He was the NHL’s third-highest all-time penalty minute leader.
