Kroeger leaves CHUM after 21 years

WINNIPEG – Howard Kroeger, the man who founded CHUM Radio’s successful BOB format and helped lead the parade of North American "playing what we want," or "playing whatever" imitators, is leaving the company after 21 years.

Kroeger will focus on his consultancy, Kroeger Media Inc., and has signed an exclusive agreement with NewCap Radio to do research and consulting.

“I have literally spent half my life with CHUM, so yes, I am going to miss the people, but at the same time I am very excited at the prospect of what lies ahead,” Kroeger said in a release.

NewCap is pleased with its coup. “Howard brings a wealth of radio experience. We couldn’t have found a more perfect fit for NewCap Radio. His programming and research acumen, not to mention a track record second to none, will assist us getting to the next level,” says Rob Mise, national director of programming for NewCap Radio.

The format guru, who tapped into the 25-54 demo’s varied musical tastes by launching BOB FM in Winnipeg in 2004, plans to continue breathing life into tired playlists with clients in the U.S., where his company has formed a partnership with Mike Anthony Researchworks in Palo Alto, CA. They’ll develop new formats like HANK-FM, which applies the gold-based format to country music, and revive flagging ones.

“There are a number of stations we know of on a first name basis who are currently on severe stress leave, and are needing to be nursed back to health. Of course we would love to help,” Kroeger said.

Kroeger will continue to be based in Winnipeg.
