New Realities. New Rules: CAB Convention registration opens


OTTAWA – Registration is now open for the 2006 Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ annual convention, the 80th anniversary of the broadcasters’ yearly gathering.

With the theme of "New Realities. New Rules." this year’s conference will take place November 5 to 7 in Vancouver at the Westin Bayshore Hotel.

Speakers have yet to be finalized but topics already on the agenda include: copyright; Internet radio; the latest in local TV sales and marketing and local radio sales and marketing; broadband opportunities; the connected consumer; gearing up for the 2007 specialty and pay CRTC policy review; personalized programming; mobile television; digital rights management; VOD; HDTV; Bay Street; a Quebec television policy review session; and the traditional small market broadcaster/CRTC face to face meeting.

And those are just the day one topics.

Day two will feature the CEO Summit; an analysis of the overall current regulatory environment; a look at the TV policy review; the radio review; and what IPTV will mean to broadcasters;

Also part of the convention is the Hall of Fame luncheon and the ever-popular, prestigious Gold Ribbon Awards. The event wraps with the annual Gala which normally features a big-name musical talent, such as last year’s headliners in Winnipeg, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, who were inducted into the CAB Hall of Fame.

"The theme for this year’s CAB Convention – New Realities. New Rules. – reflects the unprecedented rate of change that Canada’s private broadcasters are experiencing," says CAB president and CEO Glenn O’Farrell on the CAB web site. "From the explosive growth of new digital technologies to an unprecedented level of regulatory review, 2006 is shaping up to be a watershed year for Canada’s private broadcasters.

"This year’s session-packed program has been carefully designed to provide delegates with the very latest information on these important industry developments," he added.
