OTTAWA – TVOntario’s union is on side with the public broadcaster’s new strategic agenda, announced today.
The union representing more than 300 TVO employees says "the McGuinty Government’s support for the public broadcaster’s new strategic direction is a positive step," according to the press release.
The government today announced $10 million to convert the channel to an all digital media platform and $15 million to cover transitional costs over the next two years.
"TVOntario needs to come into the digital age", said Gord Boyd, president of Communications Energy and Paperworkers Local 72M. "The government’s commitment will give employees the tools and training they need to help the Authority carve out a niche in television and Internet environments."
The Ontario Educational Communications Authority (OECA) operates the TVO and TFO television networks, online Internet learning for children, and the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), a high school distance learning service.
"Our members are enthusiastic about TVOntario’s educational focus and we welcome a renewed commitment to educational content for the public," added Boyd. "Teachers have relied on TVOntario as an important resource, and now parents will have access to resource material on the internet, we hope that will keep the Authority relevant to Ontarians".
