MTS gets city contract


WINNIPEG – The City of Winnipeg has announced a home-town telecom choice.

The municipality has chosen MTS Allstream for its communications needs, approving a 28 month contract to provide wireless services, says a press release. Through the deal, MTS Allstream will provide the city and its employees with access to cell phones, wireless PC cards, BlackBerry handheld devices, cellular and wireless data airtime and related features. City staff currently use approximately 2,000 cellular phones and wireless devices.

"From police officers and firefighters, to community service workers and planners, city staff are engaged every day in an incredible array of important, front-line services," said Kelvin Shepherd, president consumer markets, MTS Allstream Inc., in the release "With this contract, they will have continued access to all of our latest wireless innovations."

The City of Winnipeg has approximately 8,300 employees with an annual operating budget of approximately $700 million. The contract is effective as of August 1, 2006, and concludes November 30, 2008.
