CHFI raises $700,000 for women’s shelters

TORONTO – On Wednesday, Toronto’s 98.1 CHFI helped to raise over $700,000 to support shelters for abused women, and to help stop violence before it starts.

In conjunction with Winners/HomeSense, CHFI took part in "Shelter from the Storm" – a fundraising campaign that included a 13-hour CHFI Radiothon from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Morning show hosts Erin Davis and Mike Cooper were broadcasting live throughout the day from Winners College Park, raising funds for the Canadian Women’s Foundation and bringing attention to the subject of violence against women.

The broadcast featured survivors’ stories, experts and celebrity guests. Matt Dusk, Divine Brown, Amy Sky, Mayor David Miller and Blue Jays catcher Gregg Zaun and centerfielder Vernon Wells showed their support by stopping by to chat with the morning show and answer phones.

The "Shelter from the Storm" campaign was originally launched April 18th, with the goal of raising $400,000 for shelters for abused women and their children along with support for violence prevention programs.

Winners retail outlets sold t-shirts and cut-outs, and instituted a "Shop ’til it Stops" program on the day of the Radiothon, on which a percentage of all sales was donated.

Six Rogers radio stations across Canada also broadcast Radiothons. By the end of the day, CHFI and Winners raised a total of $703,000 for the Canadian Women’s Shelter. The retailer will continue to sell T-shirts and cut-outs until May 14th.
