Rogers expands local calling area

OTTAWA – Rogers Cable will expand its local calling area in the Ottawa-Gatineau region on Monday.

Calls previously classified as long distance in the region will now be free local calls for Rogers Home Phone customers. Customers will no longer required to dial "1" before the number and will not be charged for a long distance call within Rogers’ new local calling zones.

"The city is pleased that Rogers has come forward to meet an important community need," said Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli, in a release. "The reality that Ottawa residents and businesses making calls within the city limits can be charged long distance rates just doesn’t make sense."

"Rogers is the only company currently offering this expanded local calling area in Ottawa," said Robin McIntyre, regional president, Rogers Cable.

"A business owner with one location in the east end of Ottawa will no longer be burdened with long distance charges when they expand and open another location in the west end," says Gail Logan, president, Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce. "This is a very positive step by removing another barrier to economic development in Ottawa."

Rogers Home Phone is available in the following Ottawa areas: Almonte, Carleton Place, Carp, Gloucester, Barrhaven, Kanata-Stittsville, Manotick, Navan, North Gower, Orleans, Ottawa, Osgoode, Richmond and Russell. These locations can now call within all of Ottawa-Gatineau, plus some outlying calling areas, without paying long distance charges. In order to determine if a home or business is within the Rogers Home Phone service area, customers can visit www.rogers.com and click on Home Phone to enter their postal code.
