NEW YORK – After having spent close to five years building Leafs TV and Raptors TV into viable digital channels, executive producer and vice-president programming John Shannon is leaving for a much bigger build.
It was announced Friday he has been appointed to the new position of senior vice president, broadcasting for the National Hockey League.
Shannon (right) will work with NHL national and local rightsholders on all aspects of the production of game telecasts including opportunities to capitalize on new and emerging broadcast enhancements and the launch of the NHL Network in the United States.
Shannon has been involved in the production of regional and national NHL hockey games for almost 30 years, including the production of 23 Stanley Cup Finals during his tenure at CBC.
Shannon has also been involved in the production of five Olympics, receiving an Emmy for his work on NBC’s coverage of hockey at the 2002 Winter Games.
"The game has never been stronger and John’s experience and expertise will help to better capture and convey the speed and skill of our players through our telecasts," said Doug Perlman, NHL executive vice president of media, in a release. "I am very pleased that John will be joining the team to help further expand our fan base through broadcast and other media outlets."
"I have spent over 25 years in and around the NHL, trying to make the game as entertaining on television as it is in the arena. I am thrilled to be continuing that goal on both sides of the border," Shannon added.
