Rogers translates leaders debate into Mandarin

TORONTO – Since an ever-increasing number of Canadians speak neither English nor French, Rogers Television will present the 2006 Federal Leaders Debate translated into Mandarin on Saturday, January 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Toronto, York Region and Mississauga and at 6 p.m. in Ajax and Pickering.

This exclusive show offers the Greater Toronto Area’s Chinese community the opportunity to hear from Paul Martin, Stephen Harper, Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe. The debate, first broadcast on January 9th, will be re-broadcast in Mandarin on Rogers Television stations in Toronto, York Region and Mississauga.

“The Federal Leaders Debate is of great importance to all Canadians”, said Charles Wechsler, station manager, Rogers Television, in a release. “This is a great opportunity for Mandarin speaking citizens to become more informed and engaged in the election process, and to expand our commitment to multi-cultural programming.”

By airing the debate in Mandarin, many in the Chinese community can listen to the sparring in their mother tongue, and come to their own conclusions before casting their vote on January 23rd, says Rogers.

Canada Votes 2006 on Rogers Television in Toronto also includes special episodes of Goldhawk Live in which viewers have the opportunity to speak to candidates from select ridings, and candidate statements from all 23 Toronto Ridings. These profiles will air on Rogers Television and are available anytime on Rogers On Demand and online at www.rogerstelevision.com from the Toronto homepage.

Tune-in on election night for live local results. Dale Goldhawk anchors the evening focusing on Toronto riding results, expert commentary and reaction from the party leaders. Viewers are invited to join in the discussion and offer their thoughts on election night, January 23 starting at 9 p.m.
