Approval yesterday, added today

TORONTO – Rogers Cable added Phoenix North America Chinese Channel to its big list of multicultural programming today. The Commission approved the channel for addition to the eligible satellite list yesterday.

From now until January 1, 2006, Rogers Digital Cable customers can enjoy a free preview on channel 599 in Ontario.

Phoenix North America Chinese channel provides the latest news and entertainment television from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, 24-hours-a-day. Broadcast primarily in Mandarin, this Chinese-language channel delivers a complete variety of television entertainment, including movies, dramas, talk shows, game shows, family and children’s programming, documentaries and live news.

With this addition, Rogers continues now offers channels in 20 different languages on 38 multicultural channels. At the end of the free preview, Rogers Digital Cable customers can order Phoenix North America Chinese channel for an additional $10.00/month when they subscribe to Talentvision for $9.95 (the regs say the sale of such foreign channels must be tied to Canadian services).

"As the diversity and size of our multicultural communities expands, there is an ever growing need for programming services in languages other than English and French,” said David Purdy, vice-president and general manager, television for Rogers Cable.

According to the 2001 Census of Population, there are more than one million Canadians of Chinese origin, over 60% of which speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Hunan or another Chinese dialect at home.
