The Peak makes the switch

PORT ALBERNI, B.C. – FM radio has come to this Vancouver Island community for the first time.

Port Alberni’s brand new FM radio station 93.3 The Peak went live on Friday, September 2nd.

Mayor Ken McRae flipped the switch that changed CJAV-AM to CJAV-FM, now known as 93.3 The Peak.

“We’re very excited to bring FM radio to Port Alberni for the first time” said Island Radio president Paul Larsen. “Port Alberni (about 200 kms northwest of Victoria) has had only AM radio service since 1946, so we can understand the community’s excitement over finally getting FM radio.”

The Peak will continue to place a strong emphasis on local news, weather, sports and community information and The Peak will continue to broadcast The Alberni Valley Bulldogs games, says the company. Musically, the station will be much more up-tempo, playing hits from the 1970s to today.

Island Radio has also just completed construction of a new state-of-the-art broadcast facility at 3296 Third Avenue that The Peak will broadcast from.

“We really wanted to invest in the community of Port Alberni,” added Larsen. “Our new facility is a sign of our strong belief in the future of Port Alberni. Many excellent local companies and trades people were instrumental in the renovation of our new offices and studios. We’re very proud of it.”

Island Radio Ltd. owns and operates six radio stations on Vancouver Island, BC in Nanaimo, Parksville, Courtenay and Port Alberni.
