Mallen gets Focus Ontario, Carroll shifts to Global News

TORONTO – Global News made a couple of announcements today, naming Queen’s Park correspondent, Sean Mallen as the new host of Focus Ontario and shifting CFRB 1010’s Bill Carroll to its 5:30 newscast.

"Sean has reinvigorated political reporting at Global News Ontario," said Ron Waksman, news director at Global Ontario, in making the announcement. "Viewers of Focus Ontario can expect Sean to advocate for the taxpayers and voters of this province on the big issues the same way he does in his nightly news reports."

Focus Ontario airs Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on Global Television and had been hosted by Carroll.

Mallen (right) has covered four provincial elections and five premiers. On the national scene, he has reported on federal elections, was in Newfoundland for the death of the Meech Lake Accord in 1990 and won an RTNDA Award for his coverage of the 1995 Quebec Referendum.

Since 1988, Focus Ontario has been Global’s main political show. Premiers’ to cabinet ministers, backroom movers and shakers to today’s newsmakers, Focus Ontario has aired them all.

Mallen will begin make his debut as regular host this Sunday September 18th.

Carroll, who’s main gig is the 8:30 to noon shift at Newstalk 1010 CFRB, can now been seen as regular commentator on Global News with Leslie Roberts.

Carroll’s “tell-it-like-it-is approach,” says the release, will be featured as a stand-alone segment every Friday starting September 16, 2005.

"I’m sure the viewers won’t always agree with me, they might even get angry on occasion but I know we’ll give people something to talk about after the evening news ends,” said Carroll in the release.

"We invite all of Bill’s listeners to watch him bring his views to a brand new audience on television. Bill’s strength is that he gets people thinking" says Waksman. "He challenges his listeners not to buy into conventional wisdom and demands accountability from the people in power.”
