UPDATE: CH Victoria expands local news, bumps Sportspage

VICTORIA – CH Vancouver Island is significantly expanding news programming this fall, but to make room, a sports institution is losing an outlet.

Starting September 6th, CH will air two distinct hours of news from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday. CH’s flagship evening broadcast will continue to feature veteran journalists and news anchors Ed Watson and Sophie Lui in a new format. The expanded coverage will also incorporate feature elements of Go!, which will cease to exist as a stand-alone program, says the CH press release.

In addition, CH News Final, hosted by Jennifer Crosby, will be expanded to one-hour weeknights and will begin at an earlier time, 11 p.m., replacing Sportspage, which will remain on Global BC. In addition, CH will be launching half hour late news coverage at 11 o’clock on Saturdays and Sundays.

Sportspage has been on the air in B.C. for almost 30 years but will no longer be seen on CH.

“CH is the market leader in news, dedicated to delivering top quality local news seven days and seven nights a week. CH News is the most watched news source on Vancouver Island. Now, news on CH will be even more comprehensive and more accessible to our viewers,” said Rob Germain, news director, in a press release.

The local news expansion means the CH News department will grow with an increase in staffing deployed in newsgathering and news production.

No word on how many new people will be added.
