SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Long-time local radio broadcaster John Campbell has died. He was 66.
According to LTVNews.com, Campbell retired from his radio job last year and moved to St. Joseph Island for his retirement. Last May Campbell began treatment for cancer in his kidney and brain, says the Soo news source.
Longtime colleague at Q-104 Easy Rock John Murtha told LTVNews: "He was a lot of fun to work with. One thing that really strikes you is that he loved what he did. I was amazed by his energy." Murtha noted that Campbell’s talk show and commentary added much to the radio station and community, says the LTVNews story. "He’s really missed around here and he put such an emphasis on local news. To think he could come up with a comment every day about a local issue was amazing and of course he never pulled back any punches."
No details on funeral arrangements have been announced, said LTVNews.
Campbell worked for Q104 and EZ Rock 100.5 in Sault Ste. Marie from 1988 until his 2004 retirement and had a long career prior to that in journalism and broadcasting, working for many years in Northern Ontario and Toronto, including CKCY AM920 and CJIC-TV in the Sault, CJMX FM in Sudbury and CKFM in Toronto.
