Rogers Broadcasting and HBC raise $310,000 to stop violence against women

TORONTO – On Wednesday, May 4, 14 Rogers Broadcasting Radio Stations across Canada joined forces to raise awareness and funds for The Canadian Women’s Foundation, an organization that works to stop violence against women and children.

According to the foundation, every minute a woman in Canada is abused

"This was the first time in Canadian history that a national radiothon addressed the issue of ending violence against women," said Julie Adam, general manager and program director, CHFI. "We are thankful to our listeners across the country for donating to such a necessary cause.”

In Toronto, 98.1 CHFI played host to a 15-hour radiothon held Wednesday, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from the corner window at The Bay, Queen Street. Listeners were invited to make a donation by phone, on-line or in person. During five specific "Empower Hours" on 98.1 CHFI, The Bank of Montreal matched donations with a total of $50,000 pledged by BMO.

In total, combining the efforts of all 14 Rogers Radio Stations and HBC initiatives $310,000 was raised.

The money raised will benefit The Canadian Women’s Foundation and 274 shelters for abused women (and their children) from coast to coast. The Canadian Women’s Foundation, Canada’s only national foundation for women and girls will use the funds to support violence prevention projects from coast to coast. www.canadianwomen.org.

Donations can still be made to the campaign through any Bank of Montreal branch or www.starttostopviolence.ca.
