71% of international students choose wireless carrier during first week in Canada, says SRG report

TORONTO — International students in Canada are quick to choose a wireless provider when they arrive here to study, according to a new report from Toronto-based consumer research consultancy Solutions Research Group (SRG).

SRG’s study found 71% of international students had a wireless account set up within the first week of arriving in Canada.

The top five wireless brands among international students are, in order, Fido, Freedom Mobile, Bell, Virgin and Rogers, with a total of 72% of the market, according to SRG’s International Students Report 2022.

In addition, Chatr and Freedom garnered the highest “definitely would recommend” scores among the providers, the report says.

“International students are more likely to sign up at physical wireless locations (70%) compared to the web or a call centre. The most important source of information for wireless carriers and plans are other students who are their friends (38%), followed by Google searches (26%).”

The International Students Report 2022 is an independent syndicated research study conducted and published by SRG in partnership with 55rush. It explores consumer behaviours, social attitudes and demographics of international students in Canada.

The study is based on detailed interviews conducted in July 2022 with 560 international students from more than 80 countries, representing 135 universities and colleges in every region of Canada.
