Corus Entertainment announced Monday afternoon veteran broadcaster John Oakley is signing off from 640 Toronto at the end of this week, after a 46-year career spanning radio and television.
His final episode of The John Oakley Show, heard weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET, will air on Friday, Nov. 28.
Oakley began his broadcasting career in Orillia before moving on to stints at CJCL in Toronto and CJAD and CFCF in Montreal. In 1991, he joined CFRB 1010, and in 2003 moved to AM 640 Toronto, where he anchored mornings for 13 years before hosting The John Oakley Show in the afternoons.
“Known for his sharp intellect, wit, and provocative commentary, he remains one of Canadian talk radio’s most distinctive and enduring voices,” Corus said in its announcement.
“Speaking to this city every day has been a privilege. The listeners, the callers, the conversations — they’ve all meant a great deal to me,” Oakley said in a statement. “I’m proud and thankful for the 22 years I’ve spent on 640 Toronto. And yes, it’s always a great day for talk radio.”
Corus said it would release more details around its talk lineup in the coming weeks.
