OTTAWA – The Government of Canada today announced over $1 million in funding from the Universal Broadband Fund’s rapid response stream will be used to help bring high-speed Internet to 1,162 households in rural Manitoba.
The communities to benefit from the funding are St. Laurent, Twin Lakes Beach, Laurentia Beach and Oak Point.
“This funding will enable the Rural Municipality of St. Laurent to reimburse households in these four communities for the initial cost of connecting to Starlink’s satellite network,” a press release says.
Information about the program on the Rural Municipality of St. Laurent’s website indicates residents can be reimbursed up to $845 for the cost of specific equipment purchased from Starlink.
Applications for funding, which cost $100, can be submitted from now until Nov. 15, 2022, and must be submitted after the equipment has been received. “You are eligible if you are a property owner or resident or tenant in the RM of St. Laurent, and the Starlink equipment is attached to and servicing a home or cottage (not an RV, shed, barn or garage, etc.,” the website says.
