OTTAWA – CBC’s Media Technology Monitor (MTM) today released its Spring 2022 Sneak Peek and English and French-language Adoption reports, which explore the topics of cord cutting, account sharing amongst subscription video on demand (SVOD) audiences and more.
“These reports provide an overview of media activities and technologies, to help you better understand Canadians’ media habits and provide a taste of the new reports and infographics we have coming this season,” a press release says.
Among the findings highlighted in the sneak peek report is that while SVOD services continue to grow, the fees associated with them have grown as well. “To cut down on costs, close to half of all SVOD subscribers are account sharing at least one of their services with another household,” the press release says.
The report also highlights that while Canadians are still subscribing to paid TV services including cable, fibre optic and satellite, almost one in five have cut the cord on their service while one in eight never had a TV service.
Nevertheless, “TV ownership is nearly ubiquitous among Canadians,” according to the press release.
The report also (for the first time) goes into how Canadians are discovering new music. MTM found that “AM/FM radio is still the number one way to discover new music for 22% of Canadians followed by personalized recommendations from a music streaming service at 17%,” says the release.
