Career Opportunity: Full-Time Supervising Producer, Global News Vancouver

Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

Reporting to the News Director, Global National the following is a paraphrase of the primary functions, but does not outline all of the duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to this position:

  • Assist in setting daily editorial and production agenda for the newscast with an emphasis on original, enterprising content
  • Work directly with reporters in crafting and vetting scripts and providing editorial direction

  • Ensure editorial and production resources are properly assigned and consistent feedback is provided, maintaining accountability for news production

  • Develop and maintain a high standard of news production that includes strong news writing, solid use of picture and sound in reporter stories and enhanced use of graphics and packaging

  • Strong control room skills, including ability to produce a newscast, and the ability to make the final call on rundown decisions during a live broadcast

  • Strong skills in directing the control room in a live network wide breaking news broadcast

  • Monitor news feeds, social media, internet for breaking news and videos as well as write and fact check promos, story leads and anchor copy

  • Be accurate, organized and have the ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments

  • Assist in issues related to personnel including hiring, training, performance management and scheduling

  • Responsible for communication with editorial staff, and initiate inter-departmental meetings as required

  • Responsible for critiquing the newscast, news stories and staff performance

  • Coordinate with Global affiliates and globalnews.ca for any resources and staffing requirements for daily stories and special projects

  • Liaise with the marketing department for promotion of daily news and feature reports

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Strong leadership skills demonstrated in a dynamic and creative work environment

  • A minimum of 10 years control room experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a senior producer role

  • Extensive experience in field production and show producing

  • Working knowledge of new media tools and technologies (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.), and related applications

  • A post secondary degree or diploma in broadcast journalism or a related field

  • Strong creative and organizational skills

  • The ability to adapt well under pressure and to work in a fast paced environment

  • Perform other duties as required
