Your role

Working under the supervision and direction of a senior producer, the successful candidate will help develop and execute a weekly world news podcast. They will be a strong journalist with exceptional critical thinking skills and a keen interest in foreign news, ideally with experience covering regions/countries beyond Canada. They will be a strong writer, chase producer, and audio editor, with an ear for creative audio storytelling. They will have a proven ability to meet deadlines and respond to breaking news if needed. They will think deeply about what the best stories and treatments are for diasporic audiences, whether they’re in Canada or abroad. Initiative, creativity, strong story-telling skills and independent judgement are a must. Finally, the successful candidate is expected to have full knowledge of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices, in addition to an understanding and passion for the podcast environment.

You have experience covering diasporic communities.
You have a strong grasp of international news, foreign affairs, and can bring a depth of knowledge and context to various stories from around the world.
You are great with tape. You have a keen ear for creative sound design, and a strong track record of creating stellar audio. You have experience creating longer-form audio.
You’re a quick audio editor, with a strong editorial ear. You know good tape when you hear it, and can edit with confidence and ease.
You’re a strong script writer and script editor. You have experience writing for the ear, and feel comfortable editing scripts for clarity and consistency.
You’re a strong chaser, with access to a network of contacts, and can identify and book the best guest to help tell a story, and/or direct an associate producer to chase the same.
You’re creative. Whether you’re problem solving in the field, or using archival material in unique ways, you work with an innovative and fresh approach.
You work well with others. Podcasting is a team sport. In this role you will be working with associate producers, hosts, mixers and managers while assigning, coordinating and supervising the work of personnel who contribute to your program.
You are a clear and considerate communicator and enjoy working closely with others.
You’re comfortable overseeing production resources and processes which can include directing talent, editing, and mixing.

Your profile:
5+ years of audio and podcast journalism experience including directing talent.
Proven track record producing a regularly scheduled news podcast.
University degree or equivalent
Minimum of four years’ media experience in a journalistic setting
Good understanding of CBC Podcasts’ mission and slate
Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments
Strong writer with an ability to write longer-form scripts
Proven ability to produce interviews and prepare interview question lines and background material
Demonstrated ability to use tape creatively, and write to it effectively
Demonstrated experience covering foreign news
Excellent audio software editing and sound design experience, i.e. Audition, ProTools, Dalet
Strong journalistic judgment
Excellent organizational skills with an attention to detail
Ability to prioritize
Independent, self-motivated combined with the ability to work well in a team environment
Excellent interpersonal skills
Track record of creativity and innovation
Problem solving skills
Social media savvy
Knowledge of CBC journalistic standards and practices is an asset
