Accountabilities/ Responsibilities:

The following is a paraphrase of the primary functions, but does not outline all of the duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to this position:

Working closely with the News Directors in both Regina and Saskatoon, and reporting in to the Director of Newsgathering in Toronto, the Managing Editor for Saskatchewan will:

  • Oversee the daily editorial agenda for broadcast and online for both Regina and Saskatoon, placing an emphasis on producing original, enterprise content.

  • Drive the daily story meetings and assigning process in both cities.

  • Ensure proper editorial resources are assigned to meet the needs of our local news platforms.

  • Monitor story development throughout the day and provide guidance to local reporters and online journalists on story direction and storytelling techniques.

  • Vet reporter scripts and online content as required.

  • Develop and maintain a high standard of news production that includes effective writing, editing, and shooting.

  • Supervise all reporters, camera operators and video journalists in both Regina and Saskatoon and oversee various operational requirements pertaining to labour relations, scheduling and timesheets.

  • Work with the marketing department to ensure proper promotion of daily news coverage.

  • Coordinate resources, human and technical, for all special projects and requests.

    Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

  • An extensive background in broadcast news with at least five years’ experience in a news management role. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in managing both broadcast and digital news platforms.

  • An amazing attitude that will engage and motivate teams.

  • A post-secondary degree in broadcast journalism or a related field.

  • Demonstrably strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • A track record of creative storytelling with strong production skills. 

  • Must be able to adapt under pressure and be able to work in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Working knowledge of digital tools and technologies, including all social media and related applications.

  • Must be able to handle the demands and pressure of multiple, daily deadlines for online and broadcast.

  • Working knowledge of the Regina and Saskatoon news markets.

  • A valid driver’s license.
