Legal Counsel

The Legal & Business Affairs team in our Toronto office is looking for a new Legal Counsel who will be responsible for providing legal and business affairs counsel to Blue Ant Media’s various business units, with a focus on its Global Channels and Media businesses.

An understanding of the various ways in which television content is distributed globally over a variety of platforms is a key part of this role and legal and business affairs experience in this area is essential. The successful candidate should also be a creative problem solver with the ability to manage competing interests and multiple deadlines.

Your key responsibilities will include:

Advising on, drafting, reviewing, interpreting, and negotiating legal agreements in content commissioning, content licensing, and channel carriage deals with cable/broadcast TV networks and streaming platforms
Working with content producers, distributors, broadcasters, and platform operators to finalize content commissioning/licensing and global networks channel agreements
Advising on regulatory, intellectual property and anti-piracy issues
Managing all aspects of those matters, including working directly with business teams (e.g., channel operations, finance and marketing) as deal terms are crafted and finalized
Organizing and managing deal flow
Advise internal partners across the company on operationalizing contractual requirements

You are an ideal candidate if you have:

A law degree from a recognized institution and are a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
2 to 3 years of relevant law firm and/or in-house experience, with strong grasp of how television licensing and distribution rights are exploited across various distribution platforms around the world
Experience with liaising and partnering with several executives across multiple departmental functions
Exceptional communication, negotiation, conceptual thinking, analytical and problem-solving and decision-making skills
Excellent ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines and interests and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Willingness to tackle matters outside of your expertise
