The Role

As anchor of CPAC’s flagship daily political program, L’Essentiel, you write, research, coproduce, and conduct accountability interviews with the elected officials, political players and power brokers behind the policies affecting all aspects of Canadians’ lives. You possess exceptional critical thinking, excellent on-camera skills and an insatiable interest in politics and news.
You are a strong and clear communicator, with superior news sense and time management skills. You consistently take initiative and are open to giving and receiving constructive feedback.
You will be based in Ottawa, steps from Parliament Hill, working with the larger CPAC team and reporting directly to the Executive Producer & Bureau Chief.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Write, research, co-produce and host CPAC’s daily French language political program, L’Essentiel
• Write, research, co-produce and host episodes of CPAC’s French language long-form interview program.
• Work on-air as anchor, host, reporter, narrator for special live coverage and events, including, but not limited to: breaking political news, federal party policy & leadership conventions, federal and provincial elections, political debates and various public affairs forums and policy conferences.
• Initiate and pursue editorial program priorities;
• Conduct and supervise research and identify potential story/program focus, guests, visual elements and treatments;
• Develop and leverage a broad network of political contacts and experts;
• Represent CPAC at political and media industry events;
• Collaborate on the aesthetic development of programs and segments;
• Participate in staff, program and other corporate meetings as required;
• Maintain necessary program files and records;
• Participate in promotional activities to increase awareness of the employer in francophone television & digital markets;
• Contribute to a team environment that recognizes, supports, respects, and welcomes a diversity of viewpoints and professional experience.
• Undertake other duties as assigned;
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications (knowledge, skills and experience required):

• Degree in journalism, political science, history or other related field, plus 5 years broadcast experience OR 10 years of professional news broadcast experience;
• Able to travel;
• Bilingual (French and English);
• Excellent on-camera and interviewing skills;
• Strong broadcast writing skills;
• Efficient organizational and time management skills;
• Up-to-date understanding of domestic and international political systems, emerging societal issues and trends;
• Ability to collect and analyze data in order to make timely production and editorial decisions;
• Natural ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, managers, contacts and the public;
• Commitment to working in a team environment that recognizes, supports, respects and welcomes diversity.
